How Books Feed Your Mind
Over the years I have developed a strong appreciation for a good book. My genre of choices have always been fiction, novels, something light, or funny with a love story. Getting lost in a book clears my thoughts and provides a place away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Exercising my mind to focus and concentrate enough to absorb what I am reading takes practice and is rewarding to me. I enjoy using my imagination to create mental visuals of the characters as their story lines are revealed.
I consider myself a casual reader and have recently taken the plunge into audio books. I am exploring other genres such as historical fiction, mystery, and biographies. In 2018 I challenged myself to read one book per month and exceeded my goal by one! I commend all who have read hundreds of books this year. You are an inspiration!
Developing daily or even consistent habits to read/listen to books has many benefits.
Here are a few that you are missing out on if you’re not reading (in my opinion):
Mental Stimulation (it gets oxygen flowing to the brain)
Stress Reduction (and it’s free!)
Knowledge (you can learn so much about yourself and others)
Vocabulary Expansion (love this one)
Memory Improvement (your older self will thank you)
Improves Critical Thinking Skills (as you follow the story and connect the dots)
Improved Concentration and Focus (calms your mind and thoughts)
Conversation starter or ice breaker (makes for a fun conversation)
Following up on to the last bullet from personal experience, I have always found it refreshing to be to confidently answer the question, “What are you reading?”or “What is the last book you read?” without it consisting of nothing but a list “self-help” books (no judgement).
As I wrap up 2018, I want to encourage you to devote time to reading or listening to a good book and sharing it with a friend. I am also interested to know what you are currently reading and what you enjoy most about reading. You can learn more about my bookshelf and share yours by following me on goodreads.
If you’re a podcast listener, Season 02 of the Now What Podcast (you can listen from the podcast tab) is going to include interviews and a book review of Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. I hope you join in!
